Too many people I know have died of suicides or attempted suicide - I know breaking the taboo and speaking up can help. Do not underestimate your power (you can help) and do not overestimate your power (you are nto to blame if you can't help). It is not always possible and no one is to blame if someone ends up taking his/her life.

A smile, a word of support, staying with the person during rough patches, are all things that can help. While suicide can be over-represented in families and #trauma can be inherited, it is not pre-determined. NO - suicide is preventable through emotional support and therapeutics. "There is not much we can do: suicide is hereditary / people intent on dying will find a way" "I need to respect someone's wish for secrecy" NO - it needs to be carefully done but letting people know they are not alone and that their pain is shared can help - those joking about suicide are not looking for attention, they may be asking for help. "Talking about suicide will encourage suicide" Some think suicide is a first-world problem but 77% of suicides occur in low and middle-income countries.

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among #adolescents 15-19 year-olds - it comes second after accidents/injuries in some geographies and/or third after violence/homicide in some geographies. So 50% of people in the US know someone who has died by suicide in their lifetime. To give you an idea of the magnitude: in the US, 1 person dies of suicide every 11 minutes. Overall, ~700K people die of #suicide every year. #suicideprevention #suicidepreventionawareness World Suicide Prevention Day is an awareness day observed on 10 September every year - but yesterday was Shabbath so I am posting today.
