I've had three previous PC laptops and the heat is no different between my Apple notebooks and PC notebooks.

I use a pad on my lap, but lately have laid the laptop directly on surfaces when not in my lap with no damage to the surfaces. ADVISORY 2008-11 :Title: Buffer overflows in smcFanControl 2.1.2 for OSX :Severity: Critical :Reporter: KaiJern, Lau ( kjlau at ) :Products: smcFanControl 2.1.2 :OS: OSX :Fixed in: to be release smcFanControl 2.1.3 About smcFanControl - First of all, this is a very wonderul software and most of the macbook install with this software. I had a PowerBook G4, and now have a MacBook Pro and it can get really warm if you don't have something between you and the notebook, but I've never had a problem with furniture. This tool is just an added convenience for people who want to manually manipulate the fan speeds. The fan speeds are automatically adjusted by the OS, but you can manually make these settings changes yourself, without the tool, it's just not as nice. OS X has software built in to control the fans. So you can increase your minimum fan speed.

No data or control on 2020 Intel Macbook Air, Catalina. smcFanControl lets the user set the minimum speed of the build in fans. Forced Fan Speed (F0Tg) can Exceed Posted Max (F0Mx), but Cannot Write/Change Max Speed.
#Smcfancontrol g4 update#
Mac G4 Firmware Update 4.4.8 improves fan control. smcFanControl controls the fans of every Intel Mac to make it run cooler. If it is, I am wondering what the optimal fan speeds are for my particular iMac. The machine runs a tad cooler, but I am wondering if this was a safe thing to do.

I upped the fan speeds (CPU 2000, HDD 2500, ODD 1500). smcFanControl includes support for the 15,4' MBP with Core2Duo processor. The statement "Controlling the SMC with a third party app to avoid a desk meltdown" is completely false. The Power Mac G4 Firmware Update 4.4.8 will run only on Power Mac G4 computers with Mirrored Drive Doors. I have a white 2.16 iMac, and I noticed it was running hot, so I did a little research and I downloaded smcFanControl 2. Even though this is an old post, I feel compelled to comment.
